You also have the finials, brackets and scones. Brackets are for supporting the rod or pole. Scones are decorative brackets and sometimes have fabrics threaded in them. As for finials, it's clear that they serve a solely decorative function. And there you have it, drapery. Now I know that a lot of us aren't very flexible with our budget and other than worrying about whether we can afford quality, we also want to get custom drapery hardware for that personal touch. Well, we shouldn't worry because there are stores that cater to those who are on a budget and should stick to it, so no worries.
Manually operated rods offer an alternative to mounted draperies that need to draw. This type opens and closes by manually pulling the drapes to the desired position. The last type of drapery rod is stationary. This type of rod will slide through a rod pocket along the top of the drapery. Stationary rods can be wood or metal and are on grommet, rod pocket, or tab top drapes. When measuring for drapes, check for obstructions. For example, do you have a low soffit or kitchen counter ending right up to your patio door? Do you plan on adding a top treatment, valance, or cornice? If not, consider a decorative rod. To measure your length, measure about 4-5 inches above your opening.
Would Curtains Suffice?. While draperies offer more functionality and usually, more aesthetic appeal than curtains do, draperies are usually not necessary for every window in the home. There are some windows for which curtains may be a better choice. It really depends on your budget, how you want the room to look, and whether you need the insulating properties that draperies afford. For the living room, you may want the more formal look that draperies provide, yet you would most likely prefer curtains for the kitchen.

Drapes and curtains can make a bold statement in every room; at the same time, they can add a subtle elegance that only highlights a picturesque window. But before we talk about decorating with draperies, let's try to define draperies more specifically.
Back in the early 1980's, CNN changed our daily lives and invented the 24 hour news cycle. The cable television industry has continued to evolve - keeping up with our steadily growing appetite for more and better information. Recently, the popularity of HGTV and other "do-it-yourself" cable networks has fundamentally changed the way we, as homeowners, approach the care, maintenance and decoration of our homes. Instead of hiring a handy-man or interior designer, we're learning how to tackle increasingly more complex tasks ourselves - without the aid of an industry professional.
